PennHip Radiographs
PennHIP (University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program) radiographs are an advanced screening method used to evaluate your dog’s hip joint health and risk for developing hip dysplasia.

Overview
Unlike traditional hip X-rays, PennHIP uses a specialized positioning technique to measure joint laxity (looseness), which is the most reliable predictor of future hip disease. This method allows for earlier and more accurate detection—often as early as 16 weeks of age.
Why Should My Pet Have PennHIP?
PennHIP radiographs provide valuable insight that can help guide lifelong care and decision-making for your pet. Benefits include:
Early Detection: Identify hip dysplasia risk before symptoms appear
Preventative Care: Take proactive steps to support joint health and mobility
Breeding Decisions: Ideal for breeders looking to reduce the risk of passing on hip dysplasia
Peace of Mind: Better understand your dog’s orthopedic health and future needs
Requirements & What to Expect
Dogs must be at least 16 weeks old at the time of the study
Sedation is required to ensure proper positioning and comfort
Three specific radiographic views are taken during the procedure
Images are submitted to the PennHIP database for official analysis and scoring
Results include a detailed report comparing your dog’s hips to those of others of the same breed
